If you have to hold a live event to demonstrate your website to your users, YOU NEED A NEW WEBSITE.

I just got invited to this “local seminar” held by Scottrade. The title of the email is “Almost Full: Discover How to Use the Scottrade Trading Web Site More Effectively at the Mount Laurel, N.J. User Summit.”

A couple of things scream out to me:

  1. I thought “almost full” was the title of the event, until it dawned on me that it refers to the attendance of the event. This may be because I didn’t pay attention to previous emails about the event. Even so, it’s an awkward greeting for an email title. “Limited Space” would be more effective and draw me to open the email faster.
  2. If I need to drive an hour (Mt. Laurel, NJ is no where near my US home) to sit in a seminar to “discover” how to trade online more effectively, then Scottrade needs to spend an hour (or several) on figuring out a) where it’s customers live, b) how to service them more effectively, locally, and 3) redesigning the trading section of their website

Why do “pick your battles” and “pick a fight” have opposite meanings? On the one side, we’re told to carefully select the things you challenge, and on the other we observe an argument starting likely for insufficient reasons. What’s up English idoms?
